These guidelines are for the use of City of Alexandria's recycling centers.
Simple Recycling Guidelines
- Empty and rinse all beverage containers and metal cans.
- Remove all caps, tops and lids.
- Flatten plastic and aluminum beverage containers and metal cans.
- Bundle papers or place in paper bags.
- Do not use plastic bags to hold recyclable materials.
ACCEPTABLE PLASTICS:
- Soda bottles
- Milk jugs
- Laundry bottles (detergent, fabric softener, bleach, dish soap)
- Vinegar bottles, cooking oil containers
- Square paint containers
- Shampoo, conditioner, lotion and cosmetic bottles
- Syrup and juice containers, peanut butter jars, etc.
DON'T RECYCLE:
- Plastic bags
- Yogurt and cottage cheese type tub containers
- Motor oil bottles
- Caps and lids
- Styrofoam or microwave containers
- Solvent, adhesive or chemical containers
- Round paint containers
- Medical supplies
- Plastic toys, flower pots, garden plastics
- Pesticide or herbicide containers
Recycling Centers
The City of Alexandria has four drop-off recycling centers. These centers have recycling containers for residents to deposit recyclables. Residents can also drop-off household, alkaline batteries at all the recycling drop-off sites. The drop-off centers are open 24 hours a day, 7 day a week.
